WHAT IS CYC?
In its 14th year, the Canterbury Youth Choruses (CYC) of Canterbury Choral Society i a curricular and performance-based youth choral program which stresses artistic and personal excellence by enhancing the singing skills and musical literacy of children through choral music training and performance opportunities. Children attending public, private and parochial schools, as well as those who are homeschooled, make new friends while experiencing the excitement of music in a supportive and nurturing environment.
The dynamic Oklahoma City University Wanda L. Bass School of Music serves as the resident location for the CYC Program. The choruses rehearse Tuesday evenings from 6:00PM-7:30PM. CYC Choruses perform in a variety of venues ranging from OCU to the Civic Center Music Hall as well as regional and national venues during performance tours.
CYC offers three choruses, by audition, for children of all backgrounds. Apprentice Choir (grade range 2-6) focuses on building vocal techniques and expanding musical literacy. Chorale, (grade ranges 6-10) works to refine and expand musical and vocal skills while learning more sophisticated music for treble voices. The Young Men’s Chorus trains adolescent boys for ensemble performance during their voice change.
WHAT MAKES CYC DIFFERENT?
Under Artistic Director Judith Willoughby, the curriculum-based program offers performance opportunities and unique experiences that set the CYC Program apart from other regional children's choruses. From the Pops, Classics and Discovery Series of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic to the ACDA National Convention, CYC students perform in a variety of venues with educationally appropriate repertoire that builds skill sets transferable to other areas of learning and increases their love of singing.
