The Canterbury Youth Choruses is a part of the education branch of the Canterbury Choral Society. This choral program for young singers concentrates on excellence in repertoire and performance while nurturing the young voice, advancing musicianship, and building community in an ensemble format. The choirs rehearse once a week during the school year and perform three to four main concerts a year. They also sing for various community functions and sometimes join their voices with the adult Canterbury Chorus.
Young people in grades 2-12 are accepted by audition in the spring and summer prior to the school year. If openings occur in any of the choirs, January auditions are held mid season. The two treble choirs for and girls boys (unchanged voices) are the APPRENTICE CHOIR (2nd - 5th and some 6th graders) and the CHORALE (generally 6th through 10th graders). The YOUNG MEN’S CHORUS for those with changing and changed voices includes singers through high school. The main criteria for CYC membership are the ability to match pitch, an eagerness to learn, and good citizenship. To make an audition appointment, call the Canterbury Office at 405-232-SING
CYC rehearses in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University. Some performances are in Petree Recital hall in the adjoining Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center. Rehearsals are every Tuesday night from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. except during the holiday break and spring break. Occasionally, extra rehearsals may be called for special events.
The Chorale of CYC appeared in concert on the 2009 American Choral Directors Association National Convention in Oklahoma City. They performed in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. For the OMEA state convention, the Chorale appeared as an honor choir. The children sang for the renovation ceremony of the Civic Center and the dedication of the Capitol dome. Every year each choir participates in age-appropriate tours.

All parents serve as volunteers at least twice a year during the season and have several volunteer opportunities as members of the CYC Booster Club.
CYC is a tuition-based organization; a concert uniform is also required of each singer. Tuition assistance, based on need, is available through the John and Mary Nichols Scholarship Fund.
