A staggering 1 in every 250 newborns are born each day partially to fully deaf while 36 million adult Americans are currently experiencing some type of hearing disorder. In preparation for Hearing Awareness Month in May, Experiences with Sound celebrates music composed or performed by those who have experience hearing loss. Canterbury partners with the international Swiss-based Phonak's "Hear the World" campaign as well as local hearing professionals and organizations in an evening celebrating education and human triumph! With her "ability to draw her audiences to the music with storytelling capacity and to create a sense of musical truth," the evening's concert features in Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" renowned Juilliard-trained pianist Valerie Zamora who is a person with hearing-impairment. Interactive activities and sign language interpretation will accompany the evening's performance to meaningfully connect the audience to the profound effects of hearing disorders. Accompanied by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, this concert is truly a multi-sensory experience.
